My interest in ED came about as my youngest child became extremely ill and was hospitalised. Her fellow patients in hospital discovered that at that time I was in the Scottish Parliament and asked me to plead their case for better ED services to be developed across Scotland. This would mean early diagnosis, specialist residential facilities in each region and accessible support services in the community. I started by raising the problems of ED in a parliamentary debate on Mental Health and then went on to brief Health Ministers and their advisors about what was needed. I was delighted to be asked to join the SEDIG committee and I am pleased to bring my knowledge as a pharmacist, businessman, politician and father to five children including a sufferer to assist the committee. I am now in public affairs and hopefully that may also assist the “cause” of raising public awareness of ED and even help argue for better resourcing for this Cinderella condition.
