Edinburgh Carers Council

Edinburgh Carers Council is an independent advocacy organisation that is carer-led in its developments. We provide a service to carers, regardless of where they live, who support someone who;

Is in hospital

•  Uses mental health services
•  Or has a mental disorder
•  In the City of Edinburgh

By mental disorder we mean any mental illness as defined by The Mental Health (Care & Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003

We facilitate a monthly group for carers caring for someone with an eating disorder. They meet on the first Monday of each month from 6pm – 8pm at the address below. The Group offers a safe and confidential space for carers to be able to talk about their caring role and the impact it has had on them. It allows carers the opportunity to share their stories and look to the future positively through discussing ways of how they can take care of their own mental health and well being while still being able to care for the cared for person with the eating disorder. It also allows for the views of carers to be advocated and heard and fed into the planning and development of services such as the Lothian Strategic Planning Group – Developing Services for People with Eating Disorders.

Any carer who feels they would benefit from meeting other carers in this situation is very welcome to attend. It is an opportunity to share information as well as keep up to date with what is going on. Please contact Linda on 270 6087 if you would like to find out more.

Glasgow (Positive Steps Eating Disorder Group)

Positive Steps Eating Disorder Group

The Positive Steps Eating Disorder Group is a support and self-help group in Glasgow whose aim is to provide support to those experiencing ANY form of eating disorder. We also welcome close friends/family/carers etc of someone who has an eating disorder/disordered eating habits.

The group offers a safe, welcoming, and informal environment and ANYONE struggling with ANY form of eating disorder, or food-related difficulty/problem can come and talk and receive support and understanding from those who are or have experienced similar difficulties.

This group offers a place to express your feelings and concerns and feel genuinely understood. It is informal and friendly and always supportive. We always respects privacy and confidentiality. The beneficial feature of this group is that it is run by someone who knows what it is like to experience an eating disorder - members feel this is valuable as they have attend services before and found such to be unhelpful as they are offered by people who have never experienced an eating disorder.

Through shared personal stories, getting to know group members, and providing support and understanding, the group aims to provide alternative or additional support to those affected by eating disorders. The group is free, organised by volunteers and meets for a few hours each week (Monday evening from 5.45pm to 7.30/7.45pm) in Glasgow city centre. I am currently providing a service at Strathclyde University, offering the group to students, via the Community Engagement Team. I makde this decision as I would like the group to be as accessible as possible.

We have members who have different types of eating problems- bulima, binge-eating, anorexia, obesity, complusive eating, and other problems that may not fit these categories. The group also has male and female members. The group is very friendly and supportive and is really informal, and there is never any pressure. The group is relatively new (been going about 4 months now)and we are keen to get more people to join us who may be experiencing eating difficulties. The group also has a website which people can join once they have been along to one of our meetings -the website is set to private and is confidential so no-one would know you are attending the group except those directly involved with the group - we respect confidentiality at all times, especially as some people having eating problems that no-one else knows about - not even close family or friends - so we always respect privacy and never judge anything anyone says or does in the group.
